Reasons Why People Give Away Freebies.
Craigslist and Freecycle are arguably the best freebie sources on the web!
Skeptics may doubt that its actually possible to get something for free, even on sites as popular as Craigslist.org and Freecycle.org. Its true that upon browsing free items given away on Craigslist, one could find old mattresses, broken electronics that can't be fixed, and all kinds of junk. Sometimes people are just trying to get rid of these items without having to do the work by putting a "free" label on them.
However, there are multiple situations where perfectly usable items, functional items and even cosmetically pleasing items are given away for free. Some of those situations are described here in order to show that classified ads websites like Craigslist and Freecycle are not only viable freebie resources, but arguably the best freebie resources on the web.
Possible situations where nice items are given away for free include the following:
Local businesses get new assets in order to stay up to date and offer their previous furniture, office supplies, etc. for free.
Businesses go bankrupt and they have to clear out all their assets. I've seen office furniture that could fill the entire office go for free because they were going out of business. They had to get rid of their large items so they could avoid paying rent another month.
People have to move and they can't afford a bigger truck.
People sometimes have to move into a smaller house or apartment and can't fit everything they have.
Some people are simply too picky so they offer their brand new leather couch because they decided they want a microfiber couch. People like this exist; their loss is your gain.
Grandparents who have no interest in video games buy them for when the grandkids come over, but then decide they don't want to keep them anymore. (The video games not the grandkids).
A family member may pass away and the family just wants someone else to enjoy the possessions left behind without the possessions being there to remind them of the loss.
The boyfriend, girlfriend or tenant moves out and leaves stuff behind. And the current resident or building manager wants the stuff out.
College students leave stuff behind every semester because they know they can replace anything the next semester with the "daddy scholarship".
The baby grew up, so the couple wants to help out other parents by giving them their baby items.
People want to reduce waste and save the environment, so they give items away instead of throwing them away.
Some people just want to declutter their living space but don't want to hassle with a yard sale.
And the list goes on.
The bottom line is, not everyone who is fortunate enough to get new stuff is so consumerist that they just throw away what they're replacing. There are plenty of people out there who share their old stuff with people who need it. And since online classified ads are a free resource where givers can connect with takers, sites such as Craigslist and Freecycle are arguably the best freebie resources on the web.
