Traditional and creative ways to get more freebies with work. Perks are freebies that are included as compensation for work, beyond the regular income. Traditionally, the perks included with a job are included to sweeten the deal for the employee. These perks may include health insurance, compensation for travel, Christmas bonuses, etc. This page was created to discuss some more creative methods of getting freebies as perks with a job.
Mystery Shoppers can get paid for their work. Their work also happens to include shopping for items or services for which they sometimes get reimbursement.
If your job offers travel expenses as a perk, then try and buy the plane tickets yourself with an Air Miles Rewards Credit Card. That way you get reimbursed for the ticket and you get air miles for free. If you make any purchases for your work, use a rewards card. You get reimbursed from your work, so you don't pay anything, and you get the rewards free.
Start your own business (or side business).
- One, you'll never have to buy what you sell or give away. Dentists never have to pay for their own toothbrush; a pawn shop owner never pays for his own watch; a car wash owner never pays for a car wash; their businesses pay for it in bulk at wholesale prices. Some businesses in merchandise may have to charge themselves a self-use tax for the product when its claimed by the owner. This is better explained by business tax classes which should be provided by the state where you register your business. A self-use tax is much less than paying retail for the product and it can still be paid for the business and not the business owner. If you like a product, and want a lot of it for free, start a business
selling that product (Movies, Surfboards, Car Parts, whatever).
- Two, if you're an expert in a service, manufacturers will find you and buy you lunch so that you'll sell the product included in the services you provide. A simple example would be a pharmaceutical company buying lunch for a doctor to present their product to the doctor so that the doctor will prescribe the medication. Another example might include a soda can manufacture buying lunch for the soda producer so that the soda producer will use their cans.
- Three, potential retailers of certain products get free samples of those products. If you own an electronics store then gadget manufacturers might send you samples of gadgets so that you'll sell them. See Free Samples: Business.
- Four, the business owner can deduct EVERY business expense from their taxes. If they do business while on vacation, the vacation expenses are deducted. If they use a cell phone, the monthly fee is deducted form their taxes. Etc.
Become a freelance critic. If you're good at writing, then you might as well benefit from it. If you can get a place to publish you're reviews and some professional-business-letter wrtting under your belt, then you would only need to contact local businesses to let them know your're coming to try their stuff and that your reviews get published. Often they'll probably go the extra mile to make your experience a good one. A critic is a type of reporter and could be considered a member of the media. This means they can get special media passes at special events and may not even have to pay for admission to the event.
