Reuse and Sharing Sites
Sites like Freecycle.org
Freecycle.org is a reuse and recycle website that connects people who are giving away items for free with people who need the items. The service is completely free and utilizes the networking power of Yahoo! groups. The site became popular due to it's promotion on Yahoo's "green" site
during Earth day.
People give away items on sites like Freecycle to de-clutter their homes or simply to help a neighbor. There are also a number of reasons listed in the article: Reasons Why People Give Away Freebies. The same situations listed in that article apply for Freecycle and similar sites. Although Craigslist.org was already a popular site, and it's "free" section readily available, Freecycle.org was revolutionary because it stressed that items should be reused in order to save the the environment.
The founder of Freecycle.org created the network because he saw that useful items were being thrown away. Large items, like furniture and bikes, would be thrown away because the people getting rid of them didn't know anyone to give them to. And these large, useful items were taking up space in landfills. Now that Freecycle is available, if someone buys a new table for their kitchen, they should have no excuse for dumping their old table in garbage. Someone, somewhere can use it and there is a way to connect with them.
Since Freecycle.org was created, a number of similar sites have popped up. These sites are essentially a specialized type of online classified ads. This is why a page like this one was created to be included in the Classified Ads Websites Directory at ActuallyFree.info.
Note: Freecycle.org is the only site listed on this page that has been tested by ActuallyFree.info. Any site that is open to an online community can have risks, so it is wise to be cautious.
