Sell your old stuff for free money.

The internet has opened the door for creating avenues to sell your old, unwanted items. This has contributed to an already existing market of second hand stores. Some may argue that since they already own the stuff, the money they receive for it isn't actually free. However, this page can be beneficial to many since selling old stuff is a way to declutter and get money quickly. This is also a way to make the most out an inititial investment.

Sell Almost Anything

  • Have a yard sale. This is the quickest and most traditional way to get rid of most of your bulk all at once. However, yard sale shoppers are expecting to pay yard sale prices. You can usually make more when you sell your stuff online. You can advertise your yard sale for free with free classified ads services.

  • eBay and other online auctions - This is the first obvious or well-known resource. Its free to sign up with eBay and shop on eBay, however eBay charges fees up front for listing items and they charge fees once the items sells. For free alternatives to eBay, see the Free Business Solutions page. The eBay Freebies page may also be helpful.

  • Amazon.com and other online stores - Amazon was traditionally a resource to sell books, however they have many more categories. Since Amazon charges fees then online sellers may be interested in free alternatives listed on the Free Business Solutions page. The trade off for using free selling resources online, is that they don't have the high website traffic that eBay and Amazon have. A free resource is free, but it may be much easier and quicker to sell on eBay or Amazon. Google Base and Half.com are other popular resources with a store format.

  • Free Webstores - If you like to sell used items on a regular basis, you can get a free webstore. Find resources for getting a free webstore and free ways to promote your store on the Free Business Solutions page.

Along with online auctions and free webstores, there are a number of specialized services and second hand stores that can be used to sell old stuff:

  • lov.li

  • artflock.com - United Kingdom

Second Hand Stores vs. Online Resources - In general, I've personally been more satisfied with selling items online than taking them to a second hand store. When you take items to a second hand store, they will usually pay dirt cheap for the items so that they can make a significant profit by selling the items in their store. If you sell the item online then you can find the highest buyer and keep almost all of the money for yourself after selling fees.

Other options besides selling your items online include trading your unwanted items for items that you want, or donating your items. For trading resources see the Trade & Barter page. Donating resources include Freecycle.org and other sites listed here.
