Back to Free MoneySell your old stuff for cash.
Selling your used items can be a great way to get quick cash and get rid of some clutter in your home. By selling a used item you reduce the initial cost that you paid for the item. If you buy a basketball for $20 and then later sell it for $5, then you actually paid $15 for as long as you had the ball. That's better than a lot of rebate or cash back programs. Learning some avenues of the black market can also potentially lead to profit if the items you're selling have become rare or part of a collection.
Some may argue that since they already own their stuff, the money they receive for it isn't actually free. However, if you can learn to sell your own used items, then you can sell anyone's used items. And it is possible to get free used items from multiple resources. You could go to yard sales and offer to haul away everything that is left at the end of the day. You could also make use of freebies found on Craigslist or Freecylce and similar sites.
There are multiple ways for selling your used items. Options for selling your stuff can include yard sales, second-hand stores, pawn shops, classified ads and online stores just to name a few.
Classified ads can be useful in two ways. You can use them to advertise specific items for sale or you can use them to advertise a complete yard sale. Craigslist is pretty much the standard for classified ads and its free. You can find sites similar to Criagslist in the Classified Ads Directory.
Online stores and auctions are other online resources that can be useful. There are sites similar to eBay that do not require any fees up front. However eBay has high popularity, which means selling your items may be more likely. Generally, I try to sell items which can be easily mailed on eBay, and I sell larger items in yard sales or locally on Craigslist.
You can try finding local places like second-hand stores and pawn shops through the Yellow Pages or try the Directory of Resources Which Offer Cash for Specific Items. In general, I've personally been more satisfied with selling items
online than taking them to second hand stores. If you sell the
item online then you can find the highest buyer and keep all of the
money for yourself after selling fees. When you take items to a
second hand store, they will usually pay dirt cheap for the items so
that they can make a significant profit in their store. One good practice I've seen from some second hand stores is they will tell you exactly what percentage (usually 50%) of their store price they will offer. If they don't think the item will sell, or even if it would sell and they already have enough in stock, then they won't buy the item from you.
Other options
besides selling your items include trading or making a
tax-deductible donation to a charity. For trading resources see the Trade & Barter page. For donating resources use the Yellow Pages to find local thrift stores and non-profit organizations.
