This page includes a list of ways to make money online. Many of these methods only require an initial set-up. Once they're going, they automatically generate money. For example, a website with high traffic will bring in revenue from advertising. The trick is getting the high traffic in the first place. Once the machine is built, it just takes takes a little maintenance to keep it running smoothly. This is what some advertisements mean by "earning money in your sleep", because you could be sleeping while someone else is looking at your website and earning money for you.
Since these are ways for earning money then some will not consider them as methods for getting free money. Most web store owners, for example, will tell you that if you're going to make money online it takes a lot of time and effort. However, since getting most things for free can take time, it doesn't hurt to mention ways to make money online. Many of these methods for making money online can be done with no start-up costs. Since the initial investment is $0, any money that you make will be free.

Web Store
Owning a web store is similar to owning an eBay business. The difference is that you won't be paying any fees to eBay, but you also won't automatically have the high traffic that eBay already has. You'll have to spend some time promoting your web store in order to make any sales.

Selling information and/or digital downloads
Many companies and individual entreprenuers sell non-tangible items online. In other words, they sell information. Information and digital downloads are sold in the form of database access, ebooks, instructional videos, music, software, etc. This is related to the "self-publishing" option described below. However, you don't have to self-publish to sell information and digital downloads.
Affiliate Programs
The internet makes it possible for anyone to sell virtually anything. You can sell any product at Wal-Mart, Amazon or any major retailer and get a commission by making use of affiliate programs. Small businesses and self-publshers also use affiliate programs. In fact, if you decided to self-publish, you can get others to sell your product for you by offering a commission through an affiliate program.
Buy and sell domain names
A domain name is a website address, such as ActuallyFree.info. They are usually registered by a web host, and cost a yearly fee. If the registrant decides not to continue paying the yearly fee, then the domain name falls back on the market. Some domain names can be pretty valuable if they're short and simple. Buy and sell gold or money on a popular virtual game and sell it for real money. I was surprised when I read about this in an article. Its hard to believe that it actually exists. Repackage Items in the Public Domain and sell them online
Items that have fallen in the public domain have an expired copyright. This means that anyone can use them for virtually any purpose without having to get permission or paying royalty fees. Using public domain resources was briefly mentioned above, under "selling information". It is mentioned here again because it is possible, not only to sell public domain items in digital form, but also in print form for free, by using services such as Lulu.com.

Sell your own Ebooks, Music, Movies, Software, Video Games, Photography, and all forms of Digital, Electronic, Downloadable Products.
The internet has made it possible for artists and developers-- authors, musicians, software writers, video game developers and movie producers-- to self-publish their work electronically and sell it online with no start-up costs.
If you are dubious of the popularity or usability of digital, downloadable products, here are just a few examples of multi-million dollar items that can be downloaded or accessed online:

If you provide news and information regularly, you can get sponsors who will essentially be paying you to mention their name at the beginning and/or end of each radio show or article.
